Creating Your Own "Six Learning Principles" Card Set
A popular two-page guide based on the Learning Principles from Sharon Bowman’s book Using Brain Science to Make Training Stick is available as a printable PDF.
If you haven’t downloaded it yet, you can get your copy here: Download the Learning Principles
Once you've reviewed the document, follow these steps to create a Learning Principles Card Set for use in train-the-trainer sessions.
How to Make the Card Set
Print double-sided on A6 white card stock. A heavier weight (around 64#/230 gsm or more) works best. If using a larger paper than A6, cut the cards to size as needed.
Ways to Use the Card Set in Training
Here are four ideas for using the Learning Principles Card Set in a train-the-trainer session.
- Match-Up Activity In small groups, participants take turns sharing examples of training activities that apply one or more of the Learning Principles.
- Dot-Voting Activity 1 During the session, pause occasionally and ask participants to reflect on which Learning Principles have been demonstrated so far. They mark the back of those cards with a sticker or dot to track what they’ve observed.
- Dot-Voting Activity 2 Participants mark the Learning Principles they find most challenging to apply. In small groups, they discuss their choices and how they might overcome those challenges in their own training environments.
A Memorable Takeaway
The card set becomes a useful takeaway and a visual reminder of the Learning Principles. Participants can refer back to it as they continue to design and deliver effective, brain-based instruction.
