Giving Back with “Training from the BACK of the Room” – Contributed by Nicole Fleming
(Note: This blog contribution is written by TBR Certified Trainer Nicole Fleming): The New Year is usually a time of reflection and change. With the year 2020 upon us, I have been reflecting on 2019 and planning ahead for 2020, using “Training from the BACK of the Room” (TBR) as one of the ways to reflect back and plan forward.
As I look back on 2019, I remember the amazing people I met in the TBR community and all the ways they gave back by using TBR to support others. My goal for 2020 is to be able to do the same. Due to the influence of these generous people, I want to give something back to my community by using TBR to support others. I don’t want to look back at the end of 2020 and wish that I’d done something different.
First and foremost, we wouldn’t have the TBR community without Sharon Bowman. She has taken the time to put together the brain-based research, concepts, and strategies for the TBR Practitioner Class. She also spends a tremendous amount of time behind the scenes building the TBR community by answering questions, posting on the two Slack TBR community sites, and giving the TBR Certified Trainers the support we need to deliver the official 2-day TBR Practitioner Class. In a day where many people have someone else replying to emails or Slack posts on their behalf, Sharon does all of this herself. I feel fortunate to call her both a mentor and a friend.
To continue on the theme of giving back, I had the pleasure of getting to know TBR Certified Trainers Anil and Kriti Jaising in 2019. Earlier in the year, Anil’s 30-year old nephew Ranuak Narang passed away due to a brain tumor (DIPG). The date of his passing coincided with Anil’s facilitation of his first TBR Practitioner Class in New York. He and Kriti donated the proceeds of that class to Dedicated Indians of America. They now continue to donate money from each TBR Practitioner Class they facilitate to charities such as the American Cancer Society and Defeat DIPG, a foundation that funds DIPG research and provides assistance for cancer treatments.
Another inspiring person I had the opportunity to meet in 2019 was TBR Certified Trainer Katjarina “Katja” Hurt. Katja noticed the rock-climbing sticker on my laptop and shared how she created a non-profit called Wilderness Chaplains in honor of her good friend and climbing partner who died in a climbing accident. Katja plans to use her facilitation of the TBR Practitioner Class to train teams that will help wilderness responders provide and receive compassionate crisis care in remote environments.
There are countless stories of individuals using TBR to make the world a better place and I can’t help but be inspired to do the same within my own community. You too, can help “pay it forward” by doing what Katja, Anil and Kriti have done. You might offer kind words or actions to someone in your community who needs the encouragement or support. You might also support your own local charities. If you are a TBR Certified Trainer, you might donate a portion of your presenter’s fee to a charity of your choice. If you aren’t a TBR Certified Trainer, you might decide to become one. Or you might let your co-workers and other training colleagues know about one of the upcoming TBR Practitioner Classes (click HERE for the 2020 Calendar) including the ones that Katja, Anil and Kriti are facilitating.
Together, we can make education and training a more productive, successful, and enjoyable experience for people. In addition, we can also use TBR as a way of giving back to causes that are important to us.
Have you found opportunities to give back using “Training from the BACK of the Room” in your community? I’d love to hear about it! Please email me at [email protected].
